Jack Russell Terrier Hunting Story...A Tale of Two Quarry by Dr. Stephanie Taylor

A few days ago Gaye Redpath and I took a couple young terriers out hunting for the day. As we were walking into the woods, Tackle sighted and chased a grazing chuck back into an earth, only to eventually lose it... this was his first lesson on that 'digging away' business, and I hope he will smarten up quickly! Then Tackle and Strike learned it is not very easy, or wise, to chase geese across a pond... oh well, recheck the wet collars and off we go again.

Later on, Gaye's lucher Score suddenly veered into a thicket, with both terriers right behind. There was a big earth under an old wood pile, and while Tackle was going in one end, Strike entered the other and began to bay. We quickly realized that there must be a "Y", because Strike would bay up the left tube for a while, then go and bay up the right tube. Score was waiting by the left bolt hole and, when he suddenly stuck his head in, we heard a deep growl--- yeah, sounds like a coon, and maybe there are two. Alright! We decided there were either two separate coons, or a tunnel connecting the right and left tube, with one coon running between bolt holes.
We tied Tackle at the left bolt hole, and covered the right bolt hole with a shovel, waiting for Strike to make a decision and settle. Soon I noticed the shovel in the right bolt hole wiggle, so I peeked in and saw (to my surprise) a pink nose-- "Guess what, Gaye--it is not a coon, we have a possum!" Strike finally committed to the left tube, and began baying and pushing on harder. Soon after we heard Strike engage, we saw Tackle lunge forward into the left bolt hole, to come out with the sharp end of a groundhog, and Strike attached to the rear!

After we secured the terriers and removed the chuck, I got the feeling that Gaye must believe I had been drinking my bath water... But being a good hunting pal, she decided to humor me, and sent Strike back into the sette. It was a very tense (on my part!) 5 minutes until Strike found the possum buried behind deep bedding, and encouraged him to see the light of day.

I will remember this earth as a good lesson in "You never know what you are going to find" while hunting.

Another interesting thought; has anyone had a dog work 2 separate quarry in the same earth for 2 NHC's?

Good hunting!
